- Haymaker Wildlife Management Area (WMA), is in Wheatland County approximately 15 miles north of Two Dot, MT, along the southeastern edge of the Little Belt Mountains. The WMA opens noon on May 15. SEE TRAVEL PLAN MAP. Walk-in access from established roads. The WMA was purchased in 1957 by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) to provide winter range for elk in the south Little Belt Mountains where they would not cause depredation to private land. The primary goal of the Haymaker WMA is to manage the grassland and forested habitats for the benefit of wildlife with elk being the focal species. The WMA also benefits a variety of other game and nongame birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. A commensurate goal of the WMA is to provide public opportunity for outdoor recreation, primarily in the forms of hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing and bird watching. The Haymaker WMA includes land on which the south facing slopes and large grassy benches provide winter range for elk. The topography of the area varies from typical foothill type to dry, gently sloping, flat-top benches which extend southward from the timbered mountains. These benches are bisected regularly by moist coulees or draws which are 100 feet to 200 feet lower than the bench tops in many areas. Water is relatively limited; one major creek (Morrissy Coulee) crosses the game range but runs intermittently during the year. There are two ponds that contain year-round water.
