Gallatin Wildlife Management Area

Gallatin
This 8,611-acre WMA spread out in several units south of Big Sky provides secure winter habitat for elk and moose, and habitat for many species of wildlife year-round.
  1. The Gallatin Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is 8,611 acres of land checkerboarded with U.S. Forest Service lands south of Big Sky. There are three main units: Porcupine, Buffalo Horn, and Deadhorse. The Porcupine Unit (1,576 acres) lies along the Gallatin River and Porcupine Creek just south of Big Sky. The Buffalo Horn Unit (6,217.5 acres) lies in 11 parcels at the far northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park along both sides of Highway 191. The Deadhorse Unit (760 acres) lies in two parcels along Deadhorse Creek, tributary to the Taylor Fork of the Gallatin River. Another 57.4 acres lies separate from these other units at the mouth of Elkhorn Creek. The primary goal for the Gallatin WMA is to provide winter range for elk and moose, and habitat for a variety of other wildlife including mule deer, black bears, grizzly bears, mountain grouse, furbearers, and non-game species. Recreation and commercial uses are extensive, especially in the Porcupine Unit, and are allowable uses as long as they do not detract from the purpose of maintaining winter range security and wildlife habitat.
