Canyon Creek Wildlife Management Area
- The Canyon Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in the Robert E. Lee Range approximately 26 miles northwest of Helena, Montana and is accessible from State Highway 279. By protecting these 3,315 acres from subdivision or other development, the primary purposes of the WMA are to maintain and where necessary improve effective wildlife habitat for a multitude of species, and to provide public hunting and fishing access to the property and adjacent public and private land. As of 2019, this WMA is comprised of five land purchases over more than two decades. In 1996, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) purchased 2,210 acres, the first land to be designated as the Canyon Creek WMA, from John and Nina Baucus of the Sieben Ranch Company. In 2010, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Conservation Trust purchased and donated 151 acres from the Ball Family, and in 2016, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation purchased and donated 729 acres from Stimson Lumber Company. In 2019, FWP acquired 225 acres combined from the Cartan and Palmquist Families with funds from the Montana Fish and Wildlife Conservation Trust, bringing the total acreage to 3,315. The purpose of the Canyon Creek WMA is to conserve effective habitat for fish and wildlife. The management goals are to conserve and where necessary improve the soil, vegetation, and security of the wildlife management area in order to provide: yearlong habitat for mule deer, moose, upland game birds, small mammals, and birds; seasonal habitat for elk, bears, lions, wolves, forest carnivores, raptors, and endemic and neo-tropical migrant birds; hunting, fishing, and other compatible recreational opportunities for the public; and access to public land.
