The Jocko River Trout Hatchery is located just outside of the town of Arlee which is 27 miles north of Missoula at the southern tip of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Reservation. We are proud to be part of a community that has so many great things to offer.
The Arlee Rainbow Trout is used extensively in Fish, Wildlife & Parks management of lakes, ponds and reservoirs. The Jocko River Trout Hatchery produces approximately 5-6 million eggs during a spawning season. Spawning season begins the second week of October. We sort the females for ripeness every other Monday and spawn them the following Wednesday. Spawning season ends the last week in December. Around 4-5 million of the eggs produced during spawning are shipped to other Montana State hatcheries where they are raised for stocking. Arlee Rainbow Trout are also reared at this hatchery for production and are distributed into state waters. About 320,000 pounds of trout are planted into 60 bodies of water around northwest Montana.
The Jocko River Trout Hatchery is staffed and operated by three full-time employees that reside on-site. The hatchery is open to visitors 7 days/week from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. The hatchery sits on 60 acres of land and includes a hatchery building with an egg incubation area, 20 fiberglass rearing troughs and 10 concrete rearing tanks. The other building contains an office, shop, storage and garage. There are 10 outside production raceways and 6 brood raceways. Water is collected from an underground spring area and is gravity fed through the hatchery and raceways through a buried pipeline. The water temperature varies seasonally from 46-52 degrees Fahrenheit. Water flow varies seasonally from 1000-6000 gpm.
