Special Notices & Closures 

  1. Advisory Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, in cooperation with the University of Montana Fire Center, DNRC, The Nature Conservancy, and Blackfoot Challenge, is working to improve winter range habitat and manage fire resiliency on the Blackfoot-Clearwater WMA. Between Sept. 18 and mid-October 2023 (exact timing depends on weather and other conditions), a 100-acre prescribed burn is planned on the WMA to assist Montana FWP with enhancing elk habitat and reducing fuel loads. Smoke may be visible at times. The project is weather dependent, but most work should be accomplished prior to the start of the general rifle season (Oct. 21, 2023).

  1. Open to motorized traffic on designated roads and all other non-motorized traffic from May 15 through November 10. Primary function of the Blackfoot Clearwter WMA is to provide elk and deer winter range. Camping is permitted for a maximum of 16 days. Grizzly bears occupy the Blackfoot Clearwater so food storage orders must be followed. Permits are also required for use by groups of more than 15 people, for any commercial activity, and for restricticed trapping opportuinities.

Directions:
Located in Missoula and Powell counties, take MT Highway 200 east approximately 6 miles from its junction with MT Highway 83 to Woodworth county road. Follow Woodworth county road north approximately 2 miles to the main entrance.
