Sleeping Buffalo
  1. The Sleeping Buffalo WMA is Bureau of Reclamation land and is managed by FWP through a Management agreement. The WMA is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Malta, MT, and is split into two portions, Area 7 and Area 8. Area 7 is the northern portion and has a mix of habitats that include grassland and sage brush systems, riparian edges with Cottonwoods along the Milk River, and cattail sloughs along wetlands. Area 8 in the larger area south of Area 7 primarily consists of introduced grasses and forbs in the uplands and large, managed wetlands. The primary goal of the WMA is to provide public opportunity for outdoor recreation, primarily in the forms of hunting, trapping, and bird watching.

Turn north off of Highway 2 on County Road 343 at Sleeping Buffalo Rock. Follow county road along east side of Nelson Reservoir. Both units are located approximately 1.5 miles west of Nelson Reservoir off county road or access trail.
