Where to Fish Twin Lakes


Upper Twin Lake is a small (5.0 acres), remote glacial cirque lake, enhanced by a dam, located in the Rattlesnake Wilderness in the Rattlesnake Creek (Clark Fork River) drainage at 7220 ft elevation. The lake lies on the Lolo National Forest (Missoula Ranger District).

Directions: There is no easy way to get to Upper Twin Lake. Access to Upper Twin Lake can most easily be obtained by taking a bicycle up USFS road #99 (which is not open to motorized vehicles) from the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area trailhead approximately 14 miles to USFS trail #534 (Lake Creek Trail) at the wilderness boundary. Hike southwest approximately 5 miles to Stuart Peak Trail #517. Hike south 0.6 mile to USFS trail #330. Upper Twin Lake is 0.4 mile east on this trail. Access strictly on-foot is most easily achieved by hiking USFS road #99 0.5 miles to USFS trail #517 or USFS trail #517.1 (the two trails merge after 1.8 miles). Continue to hike roughly north on USFS trail #517 (Stuart Peak trail) another 6 miles to USFS trail #330. Hike this trail 0.4 mile east to Upper Twin Lake.
