Where to Fish Canyon Ferry Lake


Canyon Ferry is one of Montana's foremost recreation areas because of its proximity to Helena, Bozeman, Great Falls and Butte. The reservoir covers 25 miles and there are 24 Bureau of Reclamation maintained recreation sites around the reservoir. Canyon Ferry offers a variety of recreational opportunities including boating, year-round fishing, for trout, walleye, and perch, camping, sightseeing, picnicking, hunting, water skiing,and swimming. Boat access is available at all of the campsites. A number of additional public boat launch areas are located near the dam on the north end and near Townsend on the south end. A Sapphire mine, laundromat, dining, entertainment, cabins, beaches, house boats, showers, and grocery stores are available in the area.

Effective March 1, 2018: Walleye: 20 daily, only 1 over 20 inches. Possession limit is twice the daily limit.

Fishing Report for the week of 01/14/2019

Rainbow trout are being caught in 10 feet of water or less from Pond 4 to the Silos and Duck Creek Bay to Confederate Bay using various colored jigs tipped with worms or maggots. Yellow perch are being caught in 30 to 40 feet of water between Hole-in-the-Wall and Duck Creek Bay using Hali jigs or Swedish Pimples tipped with maggots. Ice conditions have been reported at 4 to 7 inches from south end of the reservoir to Confederate Bay. Open water conditions are present from mid-reservoir to the dam.
