Where to Fish Elk Lake

Elk Lake is located in the Northeast corner of the Centennial Valley and is part of the Red Rock drainage. Elk Lake is a long, narrow, and deep lake settled in the Gravelly Mountains. Elk Lake is unique in that it is one of a few Montana Lakes to host native Lake Trout from the last glaciation. Human impact is high due to ease of access and the lodge located on the lake, but beautiful wild scenery is still present.

Size: 283.19 acres
Elevation: 6682 ft
Directions: From I-15, take either the North Valley or South Side Road through the Centennial Valley. Turn Northeast on Elk Lake Road and take it to the lake. The lake can also be accessed by Red Rock Pass from Henry's Lake.
Status of the Fishery: Elk Lake has an abundant population of large Westslope cutthroat that are stocked each year. Self-sustaining populations of smaller than average burbot and lake trout are also present. White suckers and Utah chubs are prevalent in high numbers in Elk Lake. A few large Arctic grayling are still swimming around in very low abundance.
